Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are the main characters in two novels by the American author Mark Twain, set along the Mississippi River in the 19th century: Tom Sawyer is a rascal who lives with his Aunt Polly, while the freedom-loving Huckleberry Finn is a homeless boy who is friends with Tom. Together, they experience many adventures, ranging from treasure hunts and break-ins to murder cases and running away from society. A humorous and touching story about first love, the bonds of friendship, and the struggle between keeping a promise and the importance of acting responsibly is underscored and brought to life by musical themes by the German-American composer Kurt Weill (The Threepenny Opera). The stage adaptation with music features five “Huckleberry Finn songs” by Kurt Weill. This family-friendly play will be performed for the first time in Frankfurt.

Recycled elements from industrial contexts, including parts of the old tent roof of the Papageno Theater, are repeatedly reassembled in an open, modular system to form the stage set, thereby taking on different meanings. The minimalist visual language deliberately departs from a naturalistic reconstruction of the 19th-century Mississippi milieu. Costumes and makeup create characters that fit this vision: alien, clownish, intimate, exaggerated, and a little broken—somewhere between dystopia and dark cabaret, that aesthetic of the social abyss so often associated with Kurt Weill.
