Armin Mueller-Stahl: Night and Day on Earth – Exhibition at the Opel Villas in Rüsselsheim – 2-for-1 Tickets
Born in 1930 in Tilsit, East Prussia, actor, musician, and painter Armin Mueller-Stahl is a truly exceptional figure due to the multifaceted nature of his artistic expression. With tremendous empathy, he approached not only acting but also music and the visual arts. His biography plays a prominent role in this: events in the former GDR shaped him just as much as his later life spent commuting between the U.S. and Germany.
Together with the Kunsthalle Emden and the Museum Schloss Moyland Foundation, the Opelvillen Rüsselsheim Art and Culture Foundation honors Armin Mueller-Stahl as a visual artist. With over 100 works, the foundation presents his multifaceted visual art, which includes paintings, drawings, and prints, organized into carefully selected thematic and chronological sections.
Now well over ninety years old, Armin Mueller-Stahl looks back on an eventful life. As a child, he endured National Socialism and World War II. In the German Democratic Republic, a long period of success and popularity was followed by the sudden downfall of a man who had become politically unyielding. Throughout his life, the actor—who comes from a family of artists—has painted, exploring autobiographical, cinematic, and above all political themes. For Mueller-Stahl, painting is an act of liberation. It allows him to process difficult subjects such as war, flight, and migration. To this day, the artist paints every day.
The Opelvillen are idyllically situated on the banks of the Main River, nestled between Verna Park and the Rüsselsheim Fortress. The expansive green spaces surrounding the building and the art trail along the Main River invite visitors to take a stroll before or after viewing the exhibition.
