Brotfabrik Kulturprojekt 21 e.V.

The London-based duo ZENA blends Ethiopian musical traditions with the diverse influences of the British capital. The name ZENA means “legacy” in Amharic, and that is precisely what their music is all about: The duo builds on the work of legendary Ethiopian artists such as Mulatu Astatke, Hailu Mergia, and Mahmoud Ahmed, while simultaneously evolving that sound. Keyboardist and producer Yohan Kebede and bassist and producer Menelik blend Ethio jazz, Ethio pop, alternative R&B, trip-hop, dub, and psychedelic sounds into an atmospheric, danceable sound. Inspired by legends such as Mulatu Astatke and Hailu Mergia, they bridge the gap between cultural heritage and the present. Their debut EP, “Temesgent,” was released in March and presents a unique, contemporary interpretation of Ethiopian music across six tracks.
