When Alicia Olatuja sings, the world stands still. Her versatile voice can sound delicate or powerful, dancing playfully and effortlessly through the octaves. As a child, her role model was Whitney Houston. She was shaped by the music scene in St. Louis, where she grew up. Her singing career began as a child in her local church choirs. Even then, her talent stood out in solo performances, leading her to study classical opera singing and graduate from the Manhattan School of Music. She sang blues, jazz, and classical music in concerts and operas, but her breakthrough came with her performance with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at the second inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama. Her solo in “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” caught the attention of the press and of Dianne Reeves. The Grammy Award winner became Alicia’s mentor. Since then, Alicia Olatuja has been steadily expanding her solo career and has also made a name for herself as a composer.
