No one in Frankfurt needs to be told that radio orchestras are often in a class of their own. Among the most renowned radio ensembles is the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, which can look back on a history of over a century and has served as the resident orchestra at the Proms in London for nearly as long. One person who has already enjoyed great success there on multiple occasions with the orchestra is conductor Anja Bihlmaier—Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic since 2024. The orchestra holds the native of Swabia in high regard. She is “a rare talent—bold and daring, meticulous, and yet brilliantly attuned to the musical drama of every work she tackles,” says Adam Szabo, the orchestra’s director. The evening’s soloist is Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández, who recently demonstrated his special sensitivity to Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations on a highly acclaimed album.
