It’s really just a formality: The general meeting of a tennis club in provincial Germany is set to vote on the purchase of a new grill for club parties. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem—were it not for the proposal to also fund a separate grill for the club’s only Turkish member. As is well known, devout Muslims are not allowed to place their grilled sausages on a grill rack that has also held pork. It’s a well-intentioned idea, but one that sparks intense debate and puts the otherwise peaceful club to the test. How many rights must a majority grant to a minority? Must one tolerate religions, even if one rejects them? Is there such a thing as a dominant German culture even when it comes to barbecuing? And are vegetarians, in fact, also a religious community?

The small conflict over the grill is cutting ever deeper into the members’ relationships. In a manner as disrespectful as it is comical, atheists and believers, Germans and Turks, “do-gooders” and hardliners clash head-on. And it becomes clear to everyone: This is about more than just a barbecue… It’s about how we live together. Especially since the boundaries between “right and left,” “tolerant and intolerant,” “religious and non-believing” are much more fluid than one might think. As club members, the audience is a direct part of the action and witnesses firsthand how a community can completely fall apart and how Germany’s greatest cultural treasure is fought over with burning passion and rhetoric as black as charcoal: the grill! Pork or no pork—that is the question here!
