Next Year, Same Time – Romantic Comedy at the t-raum Theater in Offenbach – 2-for-1 Tickets
The “Nächstes Jahr, gleiche Zeit,” a romantic comedy by Bernard Slade, is being performed at the small living room theater in the t-raum.
George has checked into a hotel far from home to help an old friend, who runs a wine wholesale business there, prepare the annual financial statements. Doris, on the other hand, is on her way to a nearby monastery to attend her annual retreat, as she does every year as a devout Catholic. However, when they happen to meet by chance one evening at a restaurant, sparks fly, and they spend a passionate night of love together. However, both have families they don’t want to leave behind, so they agree to meet every year at the same time and in the same place. What begins as a fling turns into a special love.
Bernard Slade tells this love story in six scenes, spanning 25 years in five-year increments. Doris and George have sex, go out to eat, and let each other in on their family joys and problems. They discuss career changes and share their views and insights. Life goes on, and the topics of conversation change. They show pictures of their grandchildren, discuss erectile dysfunction, and reflect on the realities of advancing age. Despite the ups and downs, their extraordinary relationship endures. But then comes that pesky 25th year.
The cult classic film adaptation from 1978 brought fame to the play by Canadian author Bernard Slade and took the world’s stages by storm. With plenty of humor and empathy for his characters, the author tells the story of a love that endures over time despite change—a story that Sarah C. Baumann directs with great sensitivity and subtle humor.
