Alte Oper Frankfurt

The audience in the Great Hall never takes its eyes off it, but rarely gets to hear it: the mighty organ with its three manuals, 62 stops, and more than 4,700 pipes—a masterpiece from the Berlin organ-building workshop of Karl Schuke. This visually striking instrument is now being brought to life with a program devoted entirely to Bach, played by the hands and feet of one of the most renowned organists of our time: Olivier Latry. In 2022 and 2024, the Frankfurt Bach Concerts offered him the Schuke console, so to speak, as a substitute —since Latry is the titular organist of Notre-Dame de Paris and had lost his workplace at the Cavaillé-Coll organ there for many months due to the devastating fire of 2019. This, however, gave him time for guest performances such as the one at the Alte Oper in 2024, just a few weeks before the reopening of Notre-Dame; it was hailed as sensational, a masterful demonstration of organ artistry.
