Alte Oper Frankfurt

The Guadagnini violin, built in 1769 and provided by a generous sponsor, is in good hands with him: Italian violinist Matteo Cimatti, born in 2000, is currently making a name for himself in the international classical music world. After completing his studies, refining his craft under Janine Jansen, and winning numerous prizes and awards, he is now set to make his debuts at major venues and with renowned orchestras. When the Italian—who is based in London and Switzerland—makes his debut before the audience at the Alte Oper during the 2026–27 season, his program will include, among other works, Ravel’s Second Violin Sonata, completed 99 years ago. Ravel had claimed that the violin and piano were actually completely incompatible—in order to emphasize all the more the independence of the instruments as a defining feature of the sonata, alongside the exciting jazz elements in the middle movement.
