Susanna Mälkki was long regarded as a specialist in contemporary music, but she is now increasingly focusing on the classics. And what could be a better fit than Mahler’s First Symphony—a work at the intersection of late-Romantic grandeur and a radicalism that feels breathtakingly contemporary? Of course, the Finnish conductor remains deeply engaged with the music of today. Thus, she pairs Mahler’s vivid and bold First Symphony with a work that speaks of the “last things”—quite literally—of the meaning and significance of human life, of death and silence. Her trumpet concerto *HUSH* has become Kaija Saariaho’s legacy: Susanna Mälkki conducted the posthumous world premiere in 2023, with her compatriot Verneri Pohjola performing the trumpet part then as well as now.
