No other composer has enriched the early clarinet repertoire with more outstanding works than Carl Maria von Weber, who died 200 years ago—with the exception of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the husband of Weber’s cousin Constanze. The season opener of the chamber concert series at the hr-Sendesaal provides resounding proof of this claim.

These two musical giants, who were related by marriage, were each inspired to compose works for this beautiful-sounding woodwind instrument—including the quintets for clarinet and string quartet featured here—by the outstanding virtuosos of their respective eras: Mozart by his friend Anton Stadler, and Weber by his friend Heinrich Baermann. As principal clarinetist of the hr Symphony Orchestra, Tomazz Moclnik is the ideal interpreter of these chamber music gems—together with the Hába Quartet, which enriches this special “clarinet magic” with a late string quartet by Joseph Haydn.
