Longing, escape and the fight for survival are just as relevant today as they were in Chaplin's time. The survival strategy of the silent film heroes is timeless: anarchic comedy and liberating laughter. Two silent film classics will be shown:
"The Immigrant" with Charlie Chaplin, the comedy about an immigrant in New York and "Liberty" with Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy, a breathtaking story of escape to the dizzying heights of a scaffold.
In the compositions by Uwe Dierksen (Ensemble Modern), classical cinema music meets modern sounds. As emcee, Michael Quast revives the spirit of the old music halls with their crazy programs and incidentally uses literary set pieces to address the topicality of longing, escape and the struggle for survival.
