Hermia loves the stablehand Lysander. Her sister Helena loves the nobleman Demetrius. But Hermia's father wants Hermia to marry Demetrius. To avoid this, the four unhappy lovers flee into the forest at night. They have no idea that they are in the realm of the fairy king Oberon and his proud queen Titania. The fairies, elves and nature spirits there are also in turmoil, as their ruler and his wife are having a heated argument. Oberon sends the cunning goblin Puck to enchant Titania in her sleep with the juice of a magic flower: When she awakens, she is to fall in love with the first creature she meets. Titania wakes up and falls in love - with a donkey! When Puck is also supposed to use the magical juice to bring the now estranged human lovers back together, the entanglements take their course. Only if everything turns out well after all will Puck be promoted...
