The Canterville Ghost - Comedy at Theater t-raum, Offenbach - 2for1-Tickets
In the small living room theater in the t-raum, sophisticated comedies, social satires and cabaret, literary adaptations, staged readings of classics and more are performed:
Who doesn't know the romantic and playful story of the unhappy ghost of Canterville by Oscar Wilde? An American family buys a dreamy old castle in England. What they didn't expect, however, is that they also bought the ghost of the castle! As modern Americans who don't believe in ghosts, they treat the ghost rather disrespectfully, which naturally doesn't please him and leads to all kinds of turbulence.
In the t-Raum production, however, the satirical-romantic classic is given its very own twist: the director Marta wants to bring this very story to the theater stage, while dramaturge Alfons is extremely skeptical. A fast-paced battle develops between the two, in which the two quite contrasting characters clash again and again. They narrate and act out Wilde's plot as if in passing, slipping into all the roles and pulling out all the comedic stops. There is wild improvisation, experimentation and tinkering. Who comes out on top in the end, what all this does to the poor ghost, how English belief in ghosts is compatible with American pragmatism and whether the "ghost" finally ends up on the theater stage is not revealed here. What we can say is that we can expect some fine stage fun.
