Franz Kafka's novel "The Trial" begins with the famous sentence "Someone must have slandered Josef K. ..." and unfolds a nightmarish scenario of modern existence. Bank procurator Josef K. is arrested on his 30th birthday without knowing his guilt and finds himself caught up in an opaque system of anonymous power, surreal bureaucracy and unreachable jurisdiction.
While K. desperately searches for clarity, the trial penetrates deeper and deeper into his life - until an enigmatic, inevitable end. Kafka's work paints a timeless picture of powerlessness, guilt and alienation.
