Alte Oper Frankfurt

The work remains a mystery to this day. Why did Bach, the Protestant, write this large-scale Catholic Missa towards the end of his life, thus presenting a kind of compositional legacy? Hans-Christoph Rademann, director of the Gaechinger Cantorey, has long been intensively involved with this summit work of vocal art, with the question of its compositional origins, but also with its fractures resulting from the enormous stylistic range. "All the more astonishing, almost incomprehensible, that it makes a great whole," the conductor and Bach expert marvels at the heterogeneous individual parts of the work. For the director of the Stuttgart Original Sound Ensemble, this combination of contrasting elements has a strong symbolic power: "It is a global opus, and the ending with the prayer for peace in particular is highly topical. We also need that in this day and age."
