Carlo Goldoni's comedy Le smanie per la villeggiatura ("The whims/longings for the summer retreat") is the first play in a trilogy that takes a satirical look at the life of the Italian bourgeoisie in the 18th century. The "summer retreat" - the social custom of leaving the city for the countryside in the hot summer - becomes a symbol of vanity, competition, class consciousness and people's foolish passions. Goldoni uses the everyday events surrounding preparations for a country excursion to expose the weaknesses of his characters: A thirst for recognition, exaggerated jealousy, urban rivalries and the constant fear of not being able to keep up socially.
