Franziska Linkerhand, a young, idealistic architect in the GDR in the 1960s, dreams of building houses that give people freedom and dignity. But her visions fail due to economic constraints and bureaucratic hurdles. Also disappointed in love, she nevertheless holds on to her dreams.
Brigitte Reimann's book, published posthumously in 1974, points beyond failure to a utopia: the synthesis between the present and the future, the necessary and the beautiful. The story invites us to see building as a social design tool and to demand it anew.
