Richard Bona & hr-Bigband - at the Alte Oper - 2for1-Tickets
Richard Bona built his first bass himself from crates and bicycle brake cables. The Cameroonian has since become a world star. He is one of the world's best bassists, has a fascinating singing voice and plays numerous other instruments. Together with the hr-Bigband, he brings a groovy program to the stage that is not only musically exquisite, but also simply puts you in a good mood.
When Richard Bona heard recordings of US bassist Jaco Pastorius at the age of thirteen, he was hooked. The virtuosity of the "Weather Report" bassist is echoed in Bona's playing. He reinvented himself musically after this listening experience, having previously learned to play numerous other instruments. From that moment on, Bona's heart belonged to the bass. In addition to jazz, the Grammy award-winner is highly successful in other genres such as Afropop and world music. He is unwavering on his path, which has taken him from Cameroon via a short stay in Germany to Paris and from there, when his work permit was not renewed by the French authorities, on to New York, where Bona still lives today.
He was an inconvenient figure for the musical establishment because he did not submit to the dictates of commercial success, but made the music that was close to his heart. And these were often enough songs for and about the outsiders, the marginalized, the underdogs. His numerous awards and nominations for his albums prove that he was right on the money. Richard Bona himself is now a name that others write into their biographies, but he has also worked with the biggest names in music, including Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Chick Corea, Sting and Stevie Wonder.
