The Junge Deutsche Philharmonie brings together the best students from German-speaking music academies and, after passing their auditions, forms them into an orchestra with the highest artistic standards. Since its foundation in 1974, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie has focused on contemporary music and pieces outside the usual canon. It tests boundaries, questions traditional listening habits and explores different worlds of sound. In addition to new music, the program also includes the large symphonic repertoire as well as concerts in historical performance practice. As an "orchestra of the future", the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie is a pioneer of a democratically structured orchestral culture.

The members manage themselves, take on all organizational tasks and have the opportunity to be elected to committees such as the board or the programme committee. The orchestra is an important link between studying music and starting a career as an orchestral musician. The orchestra's high artistic standards make it a seal of quality and often open the doors to leading opera and symphony orchestras for its members. In the past, numerous renowned ensembles have emerged from the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, such as the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Ensemble Modern, the Ensemble Resonanz and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.
