Die Dramatische Bühne

This summer, the Dramatische Bühne is once again presenting plays from over 30 years of the open-air festival. The vision is to revive the zany, audacious theatrical dream that has been envisioned since Shakespeare’s time: Stories full of both silliness and profundity, rich in costumes, sets, and (cheesy) theatrical magic—embodying both the splendor and the squalor of comedy and vaudeville—endearingly old-fashioned, clichéd, and wonderful all at once.

On his final night, the aging composer Salieri reflects on his life, wasted in vain, and on his struggle with his great rival, Mozart. Consumed by envy and jealousy, he tried to destroy Mozart, the darling of the gods, driving him to madness and despair, and wringing from him, on his deathbed, the greatest of all his works. This rich, sensually joyful parable about the eternal struggle between genius and mediocrity unfolds in magnificent Rococo style as a colorful series of scenes brimming with music and burlesque exuberance.

The open-air venue is located in the northern part of the park, near the Orthodox church, right next to the memorial obelisk of the Rothschild Palace. Access is via Sebastian-Rinz-Straße coming from Miquelallee or via August-Siebert-Straße from the direction of downtown. Performances take place in almost any weather. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. The bar offers a selection of snacks and drinks—cash only.
