An Unprecedented Operetta Salon – Open-Air Chamber Opera in the Palmengarten – 2-for-1 Tickets
The Frankfurt Chamber Opera is staging a scenic and musical portrait of an elusive genre. Operetta is often regarded as light entertainment: predictable plots, guaranteed happy endings, and sweet melodies that critics are quick to dismiss as “musical sugar.” But a closer look reveals that operetta is anything but superficial. Jacques Offenbach, one of the founders of modern operetta, turned the stage into a mirror of society. With biting humor and satirical sharpness, he exposes the elite’s claims to power and moral standards—and reminds us: Even the powerful are only human. Operetta breaks with aloof high culture, makes complex ideas tangible, and opens doors where social arrogance would otherwise erect walls. At the end of the 19th century, operetta underwent a remarkable evolution: concert halls and cultural salons were complemented by records and radio, elements of jazz and blues were incorporated, and foxtrot and tango rhythms enriched the music. Thus, operetta became a pioneer of new pop melodies and a bridge between classical theater and popular music.

The Operetta Salon of the Frankfurt Chamber Opera draws on this diversity, thereby freeing itself from clichés: With an unusual instrumental ensemble consisting of two saxophones, percussion, and piano, new soundscapes are created that bring well-known melodies to life in a modern, immediate way. Four singers, one dancer, and two actors take the audience on a journey through longing, love, disappointment, loneliness, dreams, and illusions. In doing so, the Frankfurt Chamber Opera playfully breaks with tradition to connect with its audience in a human, uncomplicated way—because humor touches, unites, and thus achieves exactly what operetta has always been able to do.
