Opportunity makes thieves – Chamber opera open-air at the Palmengarten – 2-for-1 tickets
The Frankfurt Chamber Opera is staging "Opportunity Makes Thieves" (L'occasione fa il ladro) by Gioachino Rossini, a one-act farce from 1812.
The opera tells a humorous tale of mistaken identity. During a thunderstorm, the suitcases of Count Alberto and Don Parmenione are switched. Parmenione finds a picture of Alberto’s fiancée, Berenice, in the suitcase and decides to impersonate Alberto in order to marry her himself.
However, Berenice wants to test her future husband first and therefore swaps roles with her friend Ernestina. When Parmenione appears, he falls in love with the wrong woman. Shortly thereafter, the real Alberto arrives and falls in love with Ernestina. This leads to many misunderstandings and comical situations. In the end, the mix-ups are revealed. The right couples find each other: Alberto and Berenice, as well as Parmenione and Ernestina. The opera ends with a happy double wedding.
Conclusion: Problems arise through chance and deception, but in the end, honesty and true love prevail.
