The last concert of the Frankfurter Museums-Gesellschaft e.V. this season brings a reunion with an old friend. Sebastian Weigle, long-time chief conductor and artistic director of the Museum Concerts, returns to the podium of the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra for the first time after his retirement.
He is bringing works by two composers who have always been particularly close to his heart. He was happy to include Ludwig van Beethoven's symphonies and concertos on the program, especially as they have been among the most frequently performed works since the museum concerts were founded. Here he conducts Beethoven's Violin Concerto with the young violinist Daniel Lozakovich as soloist, whom we still remember well as a performer of Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto. Both come to us as a well-rehearsed team. They performed together in the museum concerts in 2020, and they recently performed Beethoven's Violin Concerto in Tokyo.

A great Russian must not be missing from Sebastian Weigle's program. Sergei Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2 is considered his most important orchestral work. Rhapsodic and exuberant - these are the terms with which the work is probably most often characterized. Endlessly flowing, rapturous melodies are reminiscent of the piano concertos, a Russian folk theme chases through the rousing scherzo and, as is usually the case with Rachmaninov, the music builds up to a magnificent climax at the end - of the concerto and of the season.
