George Gershwin crossed borders and was far ahead of his time, and not just musically. His casting of black singers was one of the first times that racial barriers were broken down in American theaters, not only behind the scenes but also in the auditorium.

But who was the composer Gershwin? What inspired him, who and what did he love? Martina Gedeck answers these questions in a staged recitation of authentic documents. Accompanied on the piano by Sebastian Knauer, the charismatic actress immerses herself in Gershwin's American Dream. From the perspective of Gershwin's sister Frances, Martina Gedeck reviews Gershwin's meteoric rise from a scrappy street urchin from New York's Eastside to a celebrated Broadway star and recalls his triumphal march through the European music centers of London, Paris and Vienna, which was abruptly interrupted shortly afterwards when the Nazis came to power in Germany.
