Exceptional talent? You might think that the attribute would have degenerated into a mere marketing phrase if it weren't for the fact that there are always these outstanding young performers who are somehow different and are remembered for precisely that reason. Julius Asal belongs in this category. He has not positioned himself in the front row of pianists of his generation with great fanfare or a catapult. Rather, he got there quietly and in his own way. He was lucky in his early youth to have had the time to try things out. "My parents just let me do it. Even at my first competition, I couldn't read music." Perhaps this is why his musical approach is so intuitive and so strongly guided by feeling. Even his teacher Menahem Pressler was amazed by the Asal phenomenon: "It's a mystery to me how he was able to find his uniquely sonorous sound. The instrument seemed to tell him a secret."
