German cabaret celebrates its 125th birthday in 2026 and in his new gramophone reading, Jo van Nelsen pays special attention to the origins of the "9th muse" in the Parisian café concerts and the artists' cabarets on Montmartre. The omnipresent imperial censorship in Germany made it difficult for the young medium as well as the satirical magazines around 1900 to gain a foothold in Germany and have a socially critical impact. The trial against Franz Wedekind for lèse majesté in one of his poems was the sad climax of this paternalism - but the new art form of cabaret was unstoppable and will soon be celebrating its 125th anniversary!
On this evening, the early voices of cabaret can be heard from an original gramophone. In addition, there is the performance art and expertise of Frankfurt music cabaret artist and cabaret historian Jo van Nelsen.
