Maya, a young aspiring politician, fled to Germany many years ago as a Yazidi with her father. She has long since become linguistically and culturally at home in Germany and is involved in a party whose enlightened and humanitarian views she can identify with. She wants to help create a good future worth living. However, she always seems to run into walls when it comes to asserting herself against other members for party offices. Does the party not want her to come up because of her background? Maya struggles and wants to learn how to give speeches and wants to take part in a workshop. The leader of the workshop, the older and influential party member Stahl, behaves in a discriminatory way towards Maya. He blames people with a refugee background for overburdening municipal structures. His prejudices against Maya become known within the party and trigger internal protests against him. To smooth things over, Stahl is asked to produce social media contributions with Maya. Mutual antipathy develops into respect and the first delicate signs of mutual appreciation. Finally, Stahl advises her that she should apply for the chairmanship of the party's internal youth organization because of her talent.

In a world in which political fronts are being drawn ever more sharply and humanist values are being put to the test, "Maya's Contra" tells an inspiring and highly topical story. The play's idea of resolving contradictions and promoting dialog between different world views is by no means new. These universal questions are powerfully reinterpreted in "Mayas Kontra" and invite us to reflect on the power of humanity and the importance of empathy.
