Gus Fairbairn, also known as Alabaster DePlume, has a handful of phrases he uses all the time - whether he's walking down the street or talking to musicians and audiences. For a long time, the Manchester-born artist would say to anyone who would listen, "You're doing very well." Lately, it's another phrase with similar impact, reflecting his unwavering dedication to personal vulnerability and collective politics: "Don't forget that you're valuable."

A process that puts the person at the center - not the product - ensures that the music is unique; often like a small gemstone. Alabaster DePlume's songs are based on resonant, circling melodies and luminous tones that convey calm and generosity in warm waves - except when they're angrily directed at complacency and the everyday inhumanity of end-stage capitalism. Most importantly, however, he brings a valuable transparency to his work. "That's what I'm really doing," he says. "I want to talk about why I'm doing this and how I'm doing it."
