Christian Zacharias presents three musical giants from the musical metropolis of Vienna in this concert, familiar to audiences as an accomplished conductor as well as a pianist who conducts in "play and conduct" mode. Ludwig van Beethoven's piano concertos - as well as his symphonies - are part of the core repertoire of the Frankfurter-Museums-Gesellschaft e.V.. After a long absence, Ludwig van Beethoven's 2nd Piano Concerto will finally be played again. It is considered to be "still Mozartian", even though it already has the typical Beethovenian colorful modulations and rhythmic edges. Franz Schubert's first six symphonies are considered "youth symphonies", as he was not yet twenty when they were composed. During his lifetime, they were probably only performed in private circles. The first documented public performance of the Second Symphony dates back to 1877. While Johannes Brahms considered Schubert's early symphonies to be of only historical interest, Antonín Dvorák appreciated them for their special melodies, "harmonic progression" and "many exquisite details of orchestration". Around 100 years later, Vienna once again proved to be a place of musical innovation. In Arnold Schönberg's 2nd Chamber Symphony, chordal structures can still be interpreted tonally. However, the transition to the dissolution of tonality, which the composer consistently implemented in his later works with his move to twelve-tone technique, can already be clearly sensed.
