Polyphonic voices from Georgia - World music at the Alte Oper - 2for1 tickets
Georgian polyphony is the impressive singing tradition of a country whose language and culture was repeatedly suppressed for centuries and most recently suffered under socialist cultural policy until independence in 1991. Today, it is the internationally recognizable sound of the Caucasian country in Eastern Europe, a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage since 2008, as well as a multifaceted soundtrack of life and an expression of the unbroken will for self-determination.

One of the best-known ensembles is Iberi. The name is derived from Iberia, the ancient Greek and Roman name for the eastern part of Georgia. In its songs, Iberi combines elements of Georgian Orthodox Christianity with songs of traditional rituals, old legends and historical ballads as well as secular songs and contemporary songs.
