It's court day in the village of Huisum and village judge Adam stumbles out of bed and over himself first thing in the morning. At least that's what he claims in order to explain his various injuries. This is just the first lie of many that the judge will unabashedly tell. The real reason for his injuries is the result of abuse committed the night before. When he harasses the young Eve in her room, he is surprised by Ruprecht, escapes by jumping through the window and injures himself in the process.

The silent witness to the night's goings-on is a jug, which now lies in shambles. Eve's mother Marthe takes it to court and accuses Ruprecht of all people of the nocturnal assault. He objects vehemently, while Eve is blackmailed by Adam and remains silent. The village judge opens the trial, determined to conceal his own guilt and convict an innocent man. Adam uses threats and intimidation, more lies and false accusations to build a supposedly secure protective wall around himself ...

In his dramas and stories, Heinrich von Kleist almost obsessively pushed the existing orders and rules of his time to their limits. This is also the case here. At the end of the comedy, many things are put to the test: love, family, raison d'état, innocence. Abuse of power, abetted by naivety, violation of privacy, collusion and cronyism with the authorities, arrogance of power... all contemporary issues that are dealt with in this play.

During the interval, there will be a New Year's Eve buffet consisting of finger food (salmon rolls, spinach and feta puff pastry, fennel and polenta skewers, pasta salad, meatballs with mozzarella and tomatoes, mini muffins, fruit, cheese, etc.), savory and sweet, vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The event ends at around 22:30.
