Chamber music by a Hungarian who is still unrecognized today. Unlike Bartók and Kodály, Dohnányi remained committed to Romanticism throughout his life. His sonorous piano quintet and his sextet are captivating in their inventiveness. They are a discovery, as is the trio by the German Romantic composer Reinecke. Dohnanyi was a pianist, conductor and composer and was compared to Franz Liszt as a celebrated soloist in his younger years. He therefore had a particularly happy hand for piano chamber music, as can be experienced in this concert. As a composer, Dohnanyi saw himself entirely in the tradition of Brahms. His late sextet, however, points beyond the world of Brahms and at the same time delights in the broad stylistic panorama of the 1930s.
