French cellist Gautier Capuçon, accompanied by the hr-Sinfonieorchester and conducted by Alain Altinoglu, plays Igor Stravinsky's "Symphonie d'intruments à vent", Thierry Escaich's "Les chants de l'aube - Cello Concerto No. 2" and Antonin Dvorák's "Symphony No. 9 in E minor op. 95 - From the New World".

One symphony is not a symphony at all - but the other is one of the most famous ever! Stravinsky's Symphony for Wind Instruments bears only this name, so you may be surprised. Dvorák's symphony "From the New World", on the other hand: Music that grips every listener and captures them completely. Dvorák's 9th Symphony was composed in New York. Although the new world has left its mark on this music, it remains true Bohemian Romanticism. The concise cor anglais solo in the Adagio has contributed to its enormous popularity. It is as catchy as it is simple - and therefore a far cry from what Igor Stravinsky placed on the desks of the woodwind and brass players in his "Symphonies d'instruments à vent". It is rhythmically sharp, melodically incisive - and everything is brought to the point with the precision of the early 20th century.

Thierry Escaich, the "Composer in Residence" of the hr-Sinfonieorchester, gets to the heart of the matter when he is asked to categorize his 2nd cello concerto "Les chants de l'aube": He sees it as an aria - and in the style that is based on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
