John Adams thinks big and dreams of a supertanker rising from the sea like a rocket. Such images characterize his orchestral work Harmonielehre and the scene of the Chairman Dances. The composer from Massachusetts belongs to the field of minimal music. Harmonielehre is late-romantic, expressive and rhythmically clear. The work has been considered a touchstone for forty years and David Robertson, who conducts the hr Symphony Orchestra, is considered a connoisseur. In Bartok's Concerto for two pianos, percussion and orchestra, the percussion appears as the soloist. Timpani and xylophone form melodies. In The Chairman Dances, Mao Tse tung and a US president appear in bizarre scenery.
