The town of Bad Nauheim is known throughout Germany for its outstanding Art Nouveau complexes and the Trinkkuranlage is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful of these. Top-class concerts are regularly held in the listed complex. Between the horseshoe-shaped colonnades, there is not only an orchestra shell, but also the spa fountain temple with its splashing fountains. Behind it rises the drinking hall, which is architecturally based on an ancient thermal bath. In its center is the gilded spring bar.

Questions concerning the appropriate treatment of beings that biologically belong to the human species, but in which the typical characteristics of humans such as subjectivity, self-awareness or the ability to think are not, not yet or no longer present, are among the most difficult and controversial topics in bioethics. The lecture addresses two questions that are still topical: the question of the appropriate treatment of human embryos at an early stage and the question of how to deal with people whose brain functions have irreversibly ceased. The first question is important for the development of reproductive medicine and stem cell research, the second for transplantation medicine. The speaker will be Prof. i. R. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dieter Birnbacher from Düsseldorf.
