Museum Grube Messel - A window to prehistoric times - 2for1 on museum admission
The Messel Pit is a disused open-cast oil shale mine and has been Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. It offers a unique insight into an ecosystem 47 million years ago. The museum right on the edge of the pit shows the formation of this important fossil deposit, the living world at that time and the later historical significance of the pit. Changing special exhibitions focus on current research. However, the highlight is probably the excellently preserved fossils, which range from tiny insects to the famous prehistoric horses.
