As the birthplace of the world-famous Brothers Grimm, Hanau is dedicating the Brothers Grimm Festival to its most famous sons and their works for the 41st time. But classics by other famous authors also find their way onto the theater stage here:

"Bunbury - The Importance of Being Earnest" is one of Oscar Wilde's best-known and most popular comedies, first performed in 1895. An entertaining and intelligent theater classic full of wit, pointed dialogues and satirical allusions in the adaptation and production by Frank-Lorenz Engel. A humorous examination of the search for love, happiness and the question of whether you really have to be "serious" in life:
How practical it is to have a poor sick person you urgently need to visit whenever you want to avoid tiresome social obligations. So the landed gentry Jack invents a sick brother Ernst in the city and the young dandy Algernon a sick friend Bunbury in the country. When Jack falls in love with Algernon's cousin Gwendolyn and his friend Algernon falls in love with Jack's ward Cecily, the result is some incredibly funny entanglements. For both ladies, the most attractive criterion for an engagement seems to be the supposed first name "Ernst", which both men pretend to have. Everything else is remarkably secondary. With brilliant wordplay and an undoubted talent for satirical exaggeration in his depiction of Victorian society, Wilde subtly criticizes double standards and rigid conventions.
