Cäcilienchor: Magnificat - Christmas concert in the Dreikönigskirche - 2for1-Tickets
Mary's song of praise from the Gospel of Luke is one of the most beautiful biblical texts and has always inspired generations of musicians. In addition to the festive setting of the Latin "Magnificat" with timpani and trumpets, Johann Sebastian Bach also set a German translation of the text to music in his cantata "Meine Seel erhebt den Herren" for his second Leipzig choral cantata cycle. The basis for this cantata is not a hymn, but the so-called "tonus peregrinus", the 9th psalm tone, which also appears in the "Suscepit Israel" of the Latin Magnificat and closely links the two pieces.
Bach's splendor is juxtaposed with two other, very different settings: The Estonian composer Arvo Pärt was guided by the simplicity of Gregorian chants and found his own personal style of great spiritual clarity. His Magnificat composition for choir a cappella, written in 1989, forms a charming contrast to Heinrich Schütz's "German Magnificat".
