A man returns home from the war, from the front, from captivity. A door slams shut and he is standing outside. For Beckmann, a war returnee and war invalid, this scenario becomes a cruel reality. The hope of one day returning home after the bitter and dark years of war, back to his wife, his son, his parents, turns out to be a cruel nightmare:
The wife is in love with someone else, the young son is dead. Full of despair, Beckmann throws himself into the river, but he doesn't even succeed in committing suicide. He is too haunted by the cruel images of everyday life during the war, too plagued by self-reproach. And in the new society, the post-war world, there is no room for someone like him; for someone who no longer knows what to do because he is too overwhelmed by responsibility; a responsibility that, years after the war, no one wants to know anything about - not even and least of all those who bear responsibility for thousands of deaths.

With "Outside the Door", Wolfang Borchert created a still topical and highly socio-political play in 1946 that sheds light on the very moment when empathy should be at its greatest and, for reasons of survival, must not be: How does a newly constituted society deal with those who survive a war? What trauma do they bring with them, how does it shape a society - and how long does it last...
