Alte Oper Frankfurt

Returning home: after stints in Toronto, Cologne and Oslo, among others, Jukka-Pekka Saraste has been Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra since the 2023/24 season. The conductor was asked whether it was actually easier to lead a domestic orchestra than one abroad when he took up his post. "Yes and no," was his answer. "I know the Finnish mentality and the musicians personally very well. But if you assume that this is automatically an advantage, you get into trouble." Rather, it is about creating an atmosphere in which the musicians can accept the conductor's concept. This works very well with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra - "we're going down the same path, so to speak". And this path is currently making repeated stops at the Finnish composer par excellence: "Sibelius & Saraste" is the name of the current project, which comprises a complete recording of all Sibelius symphonies and sets the motto for the orchestra's first appearance at the Alte Oper in 15 years.
